Tube Series

2021 - Aluminium, Steel, builders line

Inspired by Muddycap’s ‘ggool’ digital project I created a series of my own using the same binding technique. From two scavenged aluminium & steel sun loungers and a spool of bricklayer twine, I bound sections of pipe together to create a set of (slightly) functional seats.

Wassily chair

The front and back curved sections, angled cross beam and strung seat, all remind me of Marcel Breuer’s Wassily chair. This chair can be used in both a conventional manner, and as a lounge chair when laid back on the mesh… But without a foot rest.

Tub Chair

This was the the first form I gravitated to when experimenting.

Based on the 18th century tub chair style of seating which most commonly features an arcing deep backrest, flowing into curved armrests.

The side and top profiles of my object have a classic feel to them, but the asymmetric nature of the tubes playfully subverts this common theme whilst still keeping the core aesthetic intact.

Conversation Chair

Based on its namesake, the 19th century French seating was designed to allow two people to have a conversation without others eavesdropping.

It seemed like the natural progression to turn ’Tub Chair’ into a conversation chair, as it was already halfway there, and needed more stability.

Arc Stool.

A desperate attempt to make a stool with the remaining scraps from the project.

Supplies were low so I knitted two small offcuts together to create a rod long enough to bridge the final seat gap.

The end result was a surprisingly usable and somewhat attractive object.
